What do the new NHS “league tables” really mean for cleft care?

September 12, 2025

You might have seen recent headlines about NHS “league tables” which rank hospital trusts. While these scores can be useful, they won’t always tell the full story for cleft care.

The scores are worked out for whole hospital trusts. But within a trust there can be lots of different specialist teams — so the ranking may not show how well your local cleft team is actually doing.

For cleft care, the best place to look is the CRANE Database.

CRANE collects detailed information about children and adults born with a cleft across the UK, and publishes clear, reliable reports on how each cleft team is doing across a variety of areas.

This is the data that really helps families, clinicians, and charities like CLAPA understand and improve cleft care. You can explore CRANE’s reports here: www.crane-database.org.uk
