Nathan’s Story

August 9, 2022

Nathan was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate and had multiple surgeries over the years. He shared his story with us and the advice he would like to give others.

My name is Nathan; I’m 26 years old and was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate. Growing up, I received over 30 surgeries; this meant sometimes having multiple surgeries a year.

It was great growing up in a close family and having the emotional and practical support of those around me. Sometimes, I would need cheering up or trips to the hospital once or twice a week.

Having had so many surgeries over the years, it became normal. What I found challenging throughout the years would be recovery, accepting that my body needed to rest.

Being at home, missing school, and playing with friends was difficult, as I always enjoyed playing football with the boys. I would also face days of feeling low and unmotivated when I’d prefer to be alone.

My advice to someone going through a similar journey would be to live your life and make what you want to make of it. Be honest with yourself and your parents, as this will support your path throughout treatments.

There may be some difficult times, such as painful surgery, prolonged recovery, or bullying. Remember, everything comes to an end at some stage; there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

I’ve pledged to fundraise for CLAPA this year; my first fundraising event will be a skydive in September, and to be honest, I’m not that nervous about it. Part of my fearless nature has developed from my cleft journey. I wouldn’t be the person I am today!

Today my life is not what I thought it might be. I became a proud first-time homeowner along with my partner Fern, and we’ve been busy renovating it for the last 12 months. We always make time to walk and play with our miniature dachshund, Dora, yes, like Dora the Explorer.

As a profession, I have been lucky to explore many roles, and I’m currently based at the head office of a well-known supermarket, working within the Bakery team. This means early morning starts weekly, traveling 240 miles from North Wales to London.

Thank you to Nathan, for sharing your story!
