Fundraising Preference Service Goes Live

July 6, 2017

Thursday 6th July sees the launch of the Fundraising Preference Service, a way for the public to quickly and easily opt-out of communications from any UK charity.

There’s been a great deal of coverage in the media over the past few years around the often aggressive fundraising tactics used by many large charities. This new service aims to protect vulnerable people who may feel overwhelmed by the numbers of appeals, calls and even door-to-door visits they receive from charities asking for donations.

As an organisation committed to transparent, honest and accountable fundraising practices, CLAPA welcomes this move towards the general public feeling in control of their relationship with charities. These relationships always work best when based on trust and good communication, so we want to make sure everyone in our community knows where we stand on fundraising, data protection, and upholding your rights.

How do we Fundraise?

As with any other charity, CLAPA takes a proactive approach in getting funding for the vital work we do. We often advertise fundraising events and opportunities, we do our best to support and thank those people who do fundraise for us, and we try to make it easy for our supporters to donate to us how and when they choose.

The same values of community and transparency that underpin all of CLAPA’s work are also at the very heart of our approach to fundraising.

As such, we are committed to the following principles:

  • We will treat all of our community with the utmost courtesy and respect, and will respond promptly and thoughtfully to any feedback or complaints about our practices
  • Our fundraising activities will be conducted in a reasoned and proportionate manner, and we will work to make sure no one feels obliged or pressured to contribute to our work
  • We won’t pass on your data to third parties for ‘wealth screening’ so we can target you for donations. We also won’t share or swap your data with other charities without your explicit consent.
  • We’ll only ever contact you by post or email to ask for donations or to advertise fundraising opportunities, and you can opt out of these at any time.
  • We currently don’t use professional fundraising agencies and have no immediate plans to do so – that means no nuisance calls asking for donations, no door-to-door fundraising, and no one asking for your personal information on the street. If we ever do work with agencies, we’ll make sure they have the same high standards for looking after your information as we do and only contact those that have opted-in.

You can find out more about how we look after your information and what your rights are by reading our Privacy Policy, which we have crafted to be as easy to understand as possible.
