• Cirencester Activity Afternoon for 8-12 Year Olds with the South West Cleft Service

    Starts: 16 Aug 2019 10:00
    Ends: 16 Aug 2019 16:00

CLAPA and the South West Cleft Service are excited to be offering this outdoor activity day for children between the ages of 8 and 12 years who were born with a cleft lip and/or palate.  Activity days such as these help children with self-confidence and give them a chance to meet others and have fun!  We have run these events over the past few years and they have proved very popular with the children who attended. WHO WILL BE THERE? Your child will be in a group of 6-12 children.  Members of the SW cleft team and CLAPA will be on hand, alongside staff from the centre. WHAT WILL WE BE DOING? This is a water and land based activity day ( Activities planned are: Giant stand up paddle boarding Soft archery Slacklining TRANSPORT AND COSTS: The day is free of charge, but you will need to bring your child to the venue.  We realise that for some families the centres are quite some distance away and we vary the location from year to year to try to accommodate everyone.  We regret we do not have facilities for helping with transport; however, if transport is difficult, please do call the Cleft Service on 0117 342 1177 and they may be able to organise car-pooling.  ABILITY, EQUIPMENT AND CLOTHING:  Your child needs no previous experience for any of the activities, but will need to be water confident to take part in any water-based activity. We aim to make the day accessible for children of all abilities. However, if you have concerns about accessibility or your child requires special adjustments, please do call us to discuss, giving your child’s name and date of birth so we can consider how best to support your child.  All equipment is provided. Your child will need to wear comfortable clothes that they can run and climb in.  More details will be provided for your chosen venue. LUNCH:  Your child will need to bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink. PARENT & GUARDIAN GROUP SESSION: Depending on staff ratios, it may be possible for the psychology team to run a parent and guardian group alongside the children’s activity days at each of the venues. These sessions would provide a supportive environment for people to share their experiences of raising a child born with a cleft, as well as give an opportunity to meet other parents and guardians. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would be interested in attending. Attendance is free and paid for by CLAPA.  Places are limited and only available to young people who have a cleft lip and/or palate.  If you change your mind or your plans change then please cancel your place so we can offer it to someone else.  Places at an event such as this are valued at over £30 per person and as places are paid for in advance we do not get refunds for anyone who cancels/doesn't turn up.  Please do give someone else the opportunity if you can't make it.
