Cleft Lip & Palate

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the causes of Cleft Lip & Palate?

The cause of clefts is not understood very well. Whilst we know what happens, we do not know why. Sometimes clefts run in families and sometimes a baby is born with a cleft without anyone else in the family having one.

Hello, I am currently undertaking a Breastfeeding Counselling Diploma and am collating information to put into a presentation linked to the support a BFC may be able to offer a new Mum wanting to breastfeed their baby with a cleft palate.  Your site refers to booklets available regarding this area, I would like to access this information and would be grateful for any other information which deals with the feeding options for babies with cleft palate.

    Many thanks

Hi Wendy, I am currently updating our Health Professionals guide which will be available as a PDF download soon. In the meantime you can order our Help with Feeding booklet from the CLapa store.

    Kind regards

    Sue

hi wendy-louise my daughter beth was born with a cleft lip and palate in the year 2002 i tried to breastfeed but was not successful, as she couldnt latch on. I had two other children and breast fed them, it was dissappointing on my part but more so for her.I will look forward hearing how you get on please keep us up to date with your findings.
