Hiya everyone,

Skye is 4 months next week and we’ve got a provisional date of her cleft palate repair as 9th July. I was just wondering though what are the guidelines on having a dummy after surgery? I have read a couple of conflicting stories but on the information leaflet from Great Ormond Street it states that dummies are not allowed. I need to speak to my cleft nurse about this really but am not going to be able to speak to her over the next couple of days and its really bugging me.. Skye has a dummy only really to fall asleep and even then i have to wedge it in because she can’t keep it in her mouth herself. It’s very much a comfort thing and i’m concerned that if she isn’t going to be allowed to have it after the op then i need to start weaning her off of it now (as well as weaning onto solids) - poor little mite has got a rough couple of months ahead!

I have also read that if a baby has a dummy and you wean them from it before 12 months then it increases the risks of SIDS?

Don’t know whats come over me today - i suddenly feel very anxious about what is ahead. I knew it was all going to be happening but feel very emotional about the whole thing

hi there...im new to all this...my son is 3 weeks old and loves a dummy to suck, he was in intensive care 4 nearly 2 weeks and the nurses just took it upon there selves to give him a dummy… My cleft nurse advised me that he needs to be off the dummy before the op as the surgeon is very strict an does not allow dummys after surgery.
