Hi have just joined this forum on behalf of my mum. We would like to know if anyone has any information or experiences in which having cleft lip/palate has caused or played a part in other conditions developing later in life.

My mum has recently developed problems with choking when eating or drinking also when eating/drinking sometimes finds that air/liquid can come down her nose.

She also has found that is very easy to catch her breath (similar to the feeling when walking outside when it is very windty and the wind catches your breath) without doing anythin strenous to trigger the feeling.

Has anyone else ever had any similar experiences or information on if this could be related to the cleft lip/palate.  Thanks

I have experienced all of these same issues. However, I also have a Fistula, which is a hole in my roof. I’ve always thought my difficulties were due to the Fistula and not my clefts. Does she have a Fistula as well?

Hi, I’m new here, was born with a cleft palate. This was operated on shortly after birth ‘successfully’ ie, I was able to ingest liquid etc. properly.

However, following the classic ear troubles throughout childhood - I have always had a problem with breathing properly through my nose, which seems to affect almost every aspect of daily life - sleeping, eating/ digesting large meals, my sense of smell, dealing with stressful situations ie interviews (due to breathing difficulties?)etc.

I have an appointment to see my GP, but was REALLY curious to hear other people’s experiences / advice…

Thanks!

I also struggle with the whole breathing issue. Due to air being restricted through the note, I do all breathing through my mouth - which can cause issues now and again.

I also think that my hearing has been affected by the numerous ear infections as a child.

Further I am unable to jump into water/ dive too quickly as this creates a painful pressure in my head (I assume again due to the restrictions of air flow between nose/ mouth).

Other than that I just think my teeth cont. want to move back where they use to sit (despite 10 years with braises) ...

Are there any dentists in this country specialising with CLAP?

Thanks
