Cambodia 2014: Week Two

Week 2

We’ve finally moved into our new house and it feels nice not to be living out of our suitcases anymore!

Moving day

This week was a national holiday so the hospitals were closed. The 15 day religious festival ‘Pchum Ben’ (Ancestors day) is very important here.  It is a time when many Cambodians pay their respects to deceased relatives. This is an opportunity for families to get together, generally going back to their villages to celebrate. Some Cambodians go to the temple and make offerings of food to the Buddhist…

Cambodia 2014: Week One

Hello! We are Nicky and Emma, two newly qualified Speech and Language Therapists from the UK.

We have been selected for this year’s City-Cambodia project, organised by City University, London. We will be volunteering in Phnom Penh, Cambodia’s capital city for three months, working primarily with cleft palate services.

It is our intention to write a weekly blog including the highlights and the struggles of working in a developing country. This year we are working at 4 hospitals in the city that provide free cleft surgery, including one completely new setting in which we are hoping to set up the…

Our final…

We are pleased to announce that we have (finally!) finished the filming and editing of our brand-new Cleft-Speech Information Video. The video…

Cambodia 2013: Week Nine

Hello folks!

We have just completed week 9 of 12 out here in Cambodia and can't believe how fast time has flown! It seems like just yesterday we were writing to you about settling-in and finding our niche...and now it's almost over!

Here's what we've been up to:

Lights! Camera! Action!
Last week we really sank our teeth into our video project. As most of you know, this video is designed to give basic speech development advice to parents of cleft lip/palate children.

We did a lot of collaborative thinking with our Cambodian Speech Advisors and realized that many parents…
